Amanda’s First O-Cup experience! Congratulations!

Race update: O-Cup #2 Woodnewton
To sum up my very first O-cup race was an amazing experience.  Since Uxbridge is so close to home, I got to spend the weekend with my family in Oshawa. Race day was Mother’s Day and I was very happy to find out my mom, dad and brother were all coming out to support me at the O-cup race.  I was really excited for them to come; since it was their first time experiencing what the sport of mountain biking is all about. They had an absolutely lovely time and were surprised at my many people there were at the event. In addition to the wonderful scenery the weather was 20+ which was perfect for soaking in the sun. I woke up that morning at 6:30am to some rain, so I was extremely happy to see that the sun was out and hoped that the trails weren’t too wet.

I had no time to relax; I was up to the start line and was quickly getting a little nervous. The nerves subsided a little bit when I chatted to some of the other girls in my category. The course was relatively flat with only a couple steep climbs. There was no mud on the trail which was a huge relief. The best part of the track was an awesome downhill, that unfortunately went straight back up! That hill was especially difficult on my second lap. But I pushed through it and made it to the finish line, even taking the rock garden route for both laps!

When I crossed the finish line my mom said that she would have been happy if I had got into last place, but she was still happy with 5th place finish. Overall the day was a successful one; I met a lot of nice people.  I hope that one day I can get a bike that is a lot lighter to ride, since I think that would definitely be advantageous especially for racing. For now the weight of my bike can only make me a better rider, so that when I actually do upgrade someday I will fly through those trails.

To top it all off,  yesterday my mom told me that she had the best Mother’s Day ever,  which made the weekend and the race that much more special to me. I’m really looking forward to the 8-hour race coming up on May 26th at Mansfield Outdoor centre.
