Message from the President: Ride with Purpose

“RIDE WITH PURPOSE.”   This is our theme for 2016.

To ride for someone.  To ride for a cause.  And to support those who do.

Not long ago, the Waterloo Cycling Club raised as much as $10,000 annually through a year-end “BIG charity RIDE” in support of Anselma House in Cambridge.  We’ve resurrected this rich piece of our history, to channel our collective energy through cycling to impact the lives of people in our community.

This year, our target is Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia.  There are over 9.9 million new cases of dementia each year worldwide.  That’s one new case every 3.2 seconds.   Three quarters of the 46 million people worldwide with dementia have not received a diagnosis, and thus have no access to treatment.  Definitive diagnosis only occurs after death.  At a cost of US $818 billion per year.

Everyone has their story for why they ride for charity.  For me, it’s very personal.  My step-father died of Alzheimer’s 4 years ago. 7 stages. 7 years. Nothing I could do living so far away from home, except sign the papers to commit him to Long Term Care.  This ride will be the first thing I’ve done in the hope that one day someone won’t have to endure the very slow, soul-crushing loss of someone you love.

Whether you sign up to ride as a member of the Big Ride Team on September 10th (individual, couple/family or relay) , or go online to support someone who is riding, we encourage you to play your part in supporting this Club event.
